Charleston’s Top 5 Must Eats This Summer

One of the most exciting perks of moving to the Charleston area, besides the celebrity sightings, is hands down the cuisine. This city’s culinary scene is one of the most vibrant in the country, with local sourcing of ingredients, a complex history, and rich culture celebrated in each dish.

Gourmet quality on a budget is a way of life. While there are plenty of fine dining restaurants that will live up to the hype, there are still countless places to eat that won't break the bank.  Still, they will make you think you just had the best meal in your life! If you are a beachgoer, there is plenty of fresh mouth-watering options steps away from the sand. Downtown Charleston is also known for its quality cuisine that is sure to wow you.

Poe's Tavern

If you're looking for a mind-blowing burger, Poe's Tavern should be first on your list.  Nestled on the main street in Sullivan's Island, Poe's provides the perfect combination of a gourmet burger, but with that laid-back beach, pub feels.  You won't believe the amount and quality of food you get for your buck. Not to mention just a quirky place to kick back with a burger and drink after a day on the beach.

Mex 1 Coastal

Salsa so good you could drink, tacos on point, and some of the best margaritas can be found at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina. The best part, dogs are welcome on the patio! You can't go wrong here if you're looking for some simple but delicious Mexican cuisine. And if you are really feeling in the mood, ask for their secret margarita.  It will not only give you a nice spicy kick, but it'll kick your behind if you're not careful. Again, a great place to live it up with friends or just grab a reasonable meal.

Home Team BBQ

Pickle connoisseurs rejoice! Aside from their spectacular mouthwatering BBQ flavors, their pickles will keep me coming back as often as my wallet lets me.  All still very reasonably priced, no going broke here.  But these homemade pickles knock it out of the park! If you're a nutmeg and mango fan (strange combo I know) that you'll love their frozen Game Changer adult beverage. Not my cup of tea, but on a hot summer day, I'm sure you'll find me cooling off with one just like most everyone else.

Oyster House

With oysters in the name, they dang sure better have great oysters, and thankfully, they do.  Now no matter where you go unless it is happy hour, oysters range from $2 to $3.50 each.  Oyster House keeps a fresh, rotating menu, so you always have what is in season with a variety of sweet to brine flavors.  Their food, in general, is reasonably priced and tasty. They are located right on Market Street, so make sure to pop over for some goodies from local vendors.

R Kitchen

A MUST GO!  If you go to only one restaurant in all of Charleston R Kitchen should be it.  At $35 a person, you receive a five-course meal worthy of all your money in your savings account.  My boyfriend and I practically licked the plates clean, (there were other people around, so we restrained ourselves).  This is truly a dining experience.  There are two chefs who cook the courses; seatings are a 20 person max party.  This provides an intimate fine-dining experience on a very reasonable budget.  The only catch, with only a few seatings a day at such private sized parties, you need to book about a month in advance.  Patio seating is just as fabulous as sitting in the kitchen.  Yes, that is why it is called R Kitchen, you are dining inside a kitchen with two professional chefs right in front of you.  The patio provides a more romantic or even laid-back feel, depending on the occasion you are celebrating.  You cannot go wrong at R Kitchen.

There really isn't a place you could go wrong here in Charleston. There is always a new restaurant, or local find no matter where you go.  Keep your eyes open, and stomachs empty to be able to enjoy all the delicious food this beautiful city has to offer.
